How to budget by paycheck with envelopes
An envelope plan can start on payday. You do not have to wait for the first of the month.
1. Name the period you are planning
Write down your next expected payday and the expenses you need to cover before it. Keep the timing visible: a monthly bill can fall before your next deposit, even if you receive wages every two weeks.
2. Work from money already available
Choose the money you are allocating now. Keep money already assigned to another purpose out of that amount, so you do not give the same dollar two jobs. Expected income is different from money you have received.
3. Give each allocation a name
Use categories that make a purchase easy to classify. This simplified fictional example illustrates the arithmetic; it is not a full household budget or a recommended allocation.
| Plan | Amount |
|---|---|
| Money available to allocate | $500 |
| Groceries | $100 |
| Transport | $40 |
| Annual bill fund | $60 |
| Left unallocated | $300 |
$100 + $40 + $60 + $300 = $500.
4. Keep a running record between paydays
If groceries starts with $100 and you record a $12.50 purchase, the envelope has $87.50 left. Paying by card does not change that subtraction. A missed entry does change how complete your record is.
5. Review what carries into the next paycheck
Unused envelope money is still part of your existing plan. If $87.50 remains and you add $50, the new balance is $137.50. Decide whether to add to it or move some allocation elsewhere; do not silently count the same balance as new income.
Every two weeks is different from twice a month
Every two weeks means a 14-day interval. Twice a month means two dates each calendar month. Write your actual paydays down when counting contributions to a future expense. Dividing a monthly goal by two is not a substitute for checking dates.
