The Stuffo field guide

Cash stuffing when you pay by card

You can plan with envelopes even when you pay by card. The envelope is a record of your plan; it does not have to be a packet of cash.

Three steps, one small habit

  1. Plan the envelope. Assign money you already have to a category such as groceries. Keep unallocated money separate in your record.
  2. Pay normally. Use your card or cash. Stuffo does not handle the payment or change where your money is held.
  3. Record the purchase. Enter its amount and choose the envelope. Check the remaining balance before the next purchase.
Fictional example

Groceries has $185 available. A purchase costs $12.50.
$185 − $12.50 = $172.50 remaining.

This is an envelope calculation, not a check of a bank account or a guarantee of what you can afford.

Why two balances can be different

Your bank balance describes money in that account. Your envelope record describes amounts you have assigned and spent. One account can contain money planned for several envelopes. Stuffo only knows the entries you make.

What if you miss a purchase?

Your envelope may show more remaining than your records support. Check your receipts or account records and enter the missing purchase before relying on the envelope again. A manual budget needs a routine for keeping entries complete.

Start with one category

Choose a category you want to see clearly. Record its purchases for a few days before adding more complexity. If manual entry does not suit you, Stuffo’s approach may not be the right fit.
