Sinking funds: a plan for future expenses

Some expenses do not fit neatly into one month. A sinking fund is a budget category for a future expense, with money set aside over time.

Give the plan a target and date

Name the expense, choose a target amount and decide when you need it. A repair, a holiday or an annual bill can each have its own category. The amount is your estimate, not a promise about the final cost.

Fictional example with three contributions remaining

Target: $600
Already set aside: $240
Gap: $600 − $240 = $360
Plan: $360 ÷ 3 = $120 per contribution.

The number of contributions depends on the dates and schedule you choose. Three contributions is an explicit assumption in this example.

A suggestion is different from money saved

A calculated contribution tells you what the plan would require. It does not mean that amount has already been saved, and the app does not move it from your bank account.

Review when things change

If the cost, target date or amount already set aside changes, review the remaining gap. When showing an app calculation, read its actual dates and monthly suggestion rather than assuming every month is counted the same way.
